Recreation Class Descriptions (2012/2013)

Many of these classes qualify as "technique" classes, but are open to recreational dancers as well. Please contact the studio if you have any questions.

Also, please note that a class must have FOUR registered dancers in order to be opened. If there are not four dancers enrolled, the office will be happy to put your child on a list of interest and contact you when there are enough dancers to open the class.

Mom and Me (toddler)
Our Mom and Me introduction class is taught by our studio owner/director, with the intention of encouraging your younger child to explore music and dance. Some very basic technique will be introduced, with an emphasis on FUN! With Mom involved, your child will feel confident and safe in a new environment, which is an important step to developing creativity and self expression. Currently not offered. Please contact the studio if you are interested. If there is enough interest, a class will be opened.

Preschool Combo (Ages 3-4)
This class is designed to maintain the attention span of a preschooler while introducing basic ballet and jazz steps and terminology. It also includes some beginner acrobatics. The instructors use variety to keep your child interested and actively engaged during class. This is a fun way to introduce your child to the world of dance.

Kinder Combo (Ages 4-5)
Much like Preschool Combo, this class introduces your child to a variety of dance technique and terminology and is designed to expose beginners to dance. The combo could include ballet, jazz, acro, ribbons or tap. Contact the studio for specific dance styles offered this session
.

Hip Hop (Ages 5-9)
This is an introduction to Hip Hop. The choreography in this class is a little slower, so the beginner student can feel more successful. This class uses the latest sounds in rap, R & B and pop music, together with movements, presented in an age-appropriate manner. Hip Hop encompasses current dance styles, as well as freestyle movement. Participation in recital optional.

Hip Hop (Teen)
This class is similar to the Hip Hop class listed above, but geared toward teens.

Beginning Ballet
Beginning Ballet was created for beginning students who are not quite ready for the formal ballet technique class. It provides a mixture of bar work, floor combinations and ballet choreography. It is a little more of a relaxed class and a good introduction to ballet technique and terminology. Recital required.

Beginning Jazz
This fun high-energy class will focus entirely on the jazz style of dance. Traditional jazz music, as well as contemporary music may be used. Dancers will learn and practice basic dance turns, leaps and other technique in an upbeat atmosphere!

Beginning Ballet/Tap
Students enjoy the combination of Ballet and Tap because it allow for variety within the class, thus keeping younger students interested throughout. This class will introduce ballet basics, like proper alignment and body positions, through barre work and center floor combinations. The Tap portion will teach the basic 1 and 2-sound steps of tap, and then begins to link these steps together to create more intricate footwork combinations.

Beginning Acro/Tumbling
This class was created for the beginning acro student. It is a one-hour class focusing only on tumbling and flexibility. Elements introduced and practiced include cartwheels, back bends and beginning chest stands. Students also learn proper stretching technique.

Intermediate Acro/Tumbling
Dancers who have progressed through Beginning Acro (or equivalent previous instruction) may be eligible for this class. Skills learned in Beginning Acro will be improved upon, with more advanced tumbling and flexibility introduced. Students can expect to work on back walkovers, back handsprings and possibly aerials. Proper stretching technique will again be enforced. Teacher permission required.

Little Ribbons (Ages 5-up)
What a fun class! As soon as a young dancer picks up a ribbon, she's in love. This is a beginning ribbons class, which combines dance, flexibility and a little bit of tumbling. Your dancer can start with this class, or it may be a good follow-up class to a combo class, where ribbons, dance and flexibility are introduced. Ballet, acro and strength/flexibility classes are good complements to this class, but not required.

Future Stars
The recreational Future Stars class combines jazz, strength and flexibility, and tumbling. This is not a competition class, but does give a dancer a good sense of team dance, with a good balance of dance and technique.
