Technique Class Descriptions (2011/2012)
All classes are one hour per week. Many of our recreation classes offer introductory technique. Please make sure to check Recreation Classes as well.
Ballet I (teacher permission required)
This is the first formal ballet class. Proper ballet technique is the focus. Most students will have a little ballet exposure before this class (Beginning Ballet or equivalent is recommended). Although this is a technique class, there will be a recital program choreographed. Recital participation is mandatory. Offered Wednesday.
Ballet II (teacher permission required)
This class follows mastery of Ballet I and requires teacher permission to attend. Continued ballet technique, including barre work, turns and leaps is taught. Although this is a technique class, there will be a recital program choreographed. Recital participation is mandatory. Offered Wednesday and Friday.
Ballet III/IV (teacher permission required)
This class continues the progression of technique learned in Ballet II. Although this is a technique class, there will be a recital program choreographed. Recital participation is mandatory. Offered Wednesday.
Intermediate Acro (teacher permission required)
Intermediate Acro builds upon and continues the skills learned in Beginning Acro (or equivalent skill base, at instructor's discretion). Students will continue to increase their flexibility and work on tumbling skills such as back-walkovers and back handsprings. This is a required class for Petite Competition Acro. Offered Monday and Wednesday.
Advanced Acro Tech (permission only)
This class focuses on advanced flexibility technique, as well as tumbling skills. Students in Advanced Acro Tech will continue work on back handsprings, aerials, tucks and layouts. Flexibility skills will include partner work, lifts, etc. This is a required class for the Advanced Competition Acro Team. Offered Tuesday.
Leaps and Turns I
The first class in the Leaps and Turns series introduces the beginning dancer to the staple of dance: leaps and turns. Students will be introduced to split and straddle leaps, pirouette and chaines turns to name a few. As their proficiency grows, the instructor may add simple combinations as well. Offered Friday.
Leaps and Turns II (permission only)
Leaps and Turns II works to solidify the skills learned in Leaps and Turns I with isolated technique practice, as well as use of more advanced combinations. Offered Thursday.
Leaps and Turns III (permission only)
Leaps and Turns III continues and builds upon the skills learned in Leaps and Turns II. In addition, dancers will learn fouette and coupe turns, and practice multiple revolutions of all turns. Combination work will continue and with greater difficulty. Offered Thursday and Friday
Leaps and Turns IV (permission only)
This class continues work from the previous two Leaps and Turns classes. Please contact the instructor for specific information. Offered Friday.
Strength and Flexibility/Intermediate and Advanced (permission only)
This class is highly recommended to complement any competition or recreation class. Dancers will work on flexibility in their legs and back, while developing leg and core strength through body weight-bearing exercises. Strength and Flexibility is particularly beneficial to acro, ballet, ribbons and jazz dancers and teaches proper stretching technique for years to come. Please contact the studio for proper placement. Offered Tuesday (Advanced) and Friday (Intermediate).
